The most distinctive design element is a wavy blue light on top of the dock that creates a bit of a buzz and lets you know it’s on and plugged into a computer. The overall picture is pretty inconspicuous with the black metal and the relatively small branding with the company and product name. It’s still a fairly compact design that fits nicely on a desk.

So they’re a bit bigger than some standard Thunderbolt 3 docks like my favorite CalDigit TS3 Plus, but of course the Sonnet docks have eGPU capabilities and the big fan they need to be a bigger size. The docks are approximately 6 “by 5” and approximately 2 “high. A large fan dissipates heat over the top of the dock and turns on and off as needed. īoth models of the eGPU Breakaway Puck share the same design and have a metal case with perforations on the top, front and sides to help ventilate the dock, which can get very hot under heavy use.

I’ve tested both versions of the Breakaway Puck for a few weeks and found that they offer significantly better graphics performance, especially if you’re using an older device like the 2016 15-inch MacBook Pro with the Radeon Pro 450 graphics that I use as the main machine. At the same time, they offer some docking functions such as additional USB ports and display connections. The docks connect to a host Mac through Thunderbolt 3 and allow more powerful graphics capabilities than the included graphics on many Macs. Back in January, Sonnet announced updated versions of its eGPU Breakaway Pucks that offer new options with Radeon RX 5500 XT and RX 5700 graphics processors for Intel-based Macs.
